Trained
as a film maker, animator and illustrator, Jonathan spent his youth
pouring over renaissance paintings, classic cinema and Looney Tune
cartoons. He developed a rather Gonzo style in his work keeping his
lines rough, sketchy and frenetic. He used his artistic
skills with a recent portrait of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood,
conceptually designed and animated music videos for northern bands
The Procession and Johnny 5th
Wheel And The Cowards as well as promotional work for Dr. Sketchy’s
Anti Art-School York, which he co-runs. He has also had sculptural
work and paintings exhibited in galleries in Covent Garden and London
Graphics.
In
my piece 'Captivity' I wanted to convey the obvious sense of
loneliness, however, the main thing that struck me when capturing the
image was how playful the monkey in London Zoo was acting whilst the
gawping onlookers enjoyed it's facade. It seemed a rather human trait
of the monkey to cover up such emotion and only display it's truth
through clenching the bars; it was this that I chose to focus on
while others photographed the whole monkey.
